Steel Single Flanged Rail Wheels

MATERIAL: Steel to BS970: Part I: 1983: 080M40
Operating temperature range: Plain bored or keywayed wheels -30 ̊C to 350 ̊C Ball or taper roller bearinged wheels -40 ̊C to 120 ̊C.

The maximum available load rating given for a wheel is based on the full tread width being in contact with the rail. Working loads must be calculated based on the useable rail width and operating conditions. Therefore the load capacity must be based around the contact area, not on the rail or wheel width.

Standard wheels have a 3 ̊ tread angle to assist centering of pairs of wheels on common axles when used with convex crown rails. When single flanged wheels are to be used separately or on flat topped rails, flat tread wheels (which have the tread parallel to the wheel axis and flanges at a 5 ̊angle) are the correct solution.

Characteristics

The wheels have good axial and flange load capabilities. Bore type & axle arrangement will influence the side force potential and must be considered.
Temperature ranges especially at the higher end of the spectrum will derate the calculated load capacity of a wheel operating at ambient temperatures.
Solid steel flanged wheels have a very high load capacity and low rolling resistance. They have low wear and high shock resistance and are not generally adversely affected by sharp materials. A higher noise level should be considered as well as transmission of vibration to the load. At regular exposure to high temperatures, frequently bearing-lubrication with high-temperature grease is recommended. Various options exist for high temperature solutions.

Applications

Heavier loads on rails or other profiles including angle iron, flat bar or sunken running surfaces such as hangar doors or port rails.
